Caring for your wellbeing in pregnancy

Pregnancy is an exciting time, but it can also be physically taxing.

Whether you’re caring for other children or working – or both – the demands of the world “out there” can draw energy away from your “Centre”.

Deep connection

According to Chinese medicine, your baby dwells within the very core of you. When you take energy in – through food, water, sleep, breath – it arrives in your “Centre” (“Zhong”) and then circulates through YOU. During pregnancy, as soon as energy reaches this Centre in you, it is simultaneously available to your baby as well.

This connection is recognised in classical Chinese medicine by the “Bao Mai”, a pathway of energy and information flow that connects the Heart to the Womb. In physical terms, we can see that the embryo must dwell within the mother in order to live and grow. This connection of energy exists first, then the umbilical cord becomes a physical representation of that connection – sustaining the baby throughout prenatal life, until it is time to separate at birth and breathe independently for the first time.

Reading the signals

This connection exists at the deepest level, and the intelligence that creates your physical form also fiercely protects the energy supply to your baby.  Therefore, when you feel tired, this is a sign from your body’s intelligence to stop investing energy “out there” and to slow down, close your eyes and allow energy to flow within.

How can acupuncture help?

Acupuncture works on many physical mechanisms simultaneously. Most people who come to our clinic for acupuncture are surprised to find how deeply relaxed they feel during and after their session. This is no accident – acupuncture has been found to have a number of physiological effects such as releasing endorphins (the body’s own opiods), and switching on the “rest-repair-relax” aspect of the nervous system (opposite to “fight-flight”).

Research suggests that acupuncture is a low-risk therapy in pregnancy. Because it is a drug-free treatment, it is a wonderful addition to your health tool kit for many of the common problems that arise during pregnancy.

A regular acupuncture session during pregnancy can help you to connect to your Centre within, encouraging restoration and a state of calm.
